I thought this was a great time to have a look at other programs that also try to solve the problem of too much distraction to get any writing done. They have re-thought what they did on the iPad, and made this application just as good for the Mac. InformationArchitects just came out with their version of iAWriter for the Mac, and it’s a brilliant app. On the Mac I’ve been using Omm Writer Dana, another brilliant implementation of this idea. ![]() So far, my favorite is iAWriter for the iPad, a program I use just about every day for the bulk of all my drafts. I’ve written before about how the distraction-free writing enviroments that are embodied in some recent writing software really help me to focus and get a lot done in the time I have available. The bottom two images are the default themes.As someone who writes and publishes constantly, the tools that I use are pretty important to me. Sidenote: For those who are interested, the top screenshot uses a slightly modified version of the wood floor wallpaper (JPG), which I also use as a custom dashboard wallpaper. The application is compatible with platforms, so you can use it on Mac OS X, Windows or Linux. The really worst thing about FocusWriter is that it’s an ugly icon, but if it’s your only complaint about the app, you’ll have it pretty good. You can see all of this information by hovering your mouse over the bottom of the FocusWriter screen (see the screenshot below), so it’s not always visible or in your own way. Outside of Eyecandy, there are also a number of really useful writing features, and it tracks word count, page count, number of copies, number of characters, and the ability to set writing goals for either time or word typed. To do this, drop from the Options menu and select Themes. The look is highly customizable, so you can set any font and background to best match.
